York Student Bursary

sharing opportunities for discovery and creativity

 

The City of York Brach of the Embroiderers Guild as set up funds to support two bursaries for students studying the embellishment of textiles with surface embroidery. The students are to have their address in the YO postcode area.

The first is for students taking a degree course and the monies awarded will be up to £500. Click here for details. The second will be an award of up to £100 for a student at York College. Please contact Mrs Sue Giles, The Garden House, Back Lane, Allerthorpe, York YO42 4RN for details

 

Previous successful students

The recipient of the Bursary of £500 for the academic year 2004-5 is Charlotte Connor who studied at the University of Leeds.

The recipient of the Bursary of £500 for the academic year 2005-6 is Choe McKay who is studying at the Edinburgh University.

The recipient of a Bursary for 2006/7 is Tamsin Casswell. She will receive £200 for a postgraduate course at Goldsmiths College

The recipient of the Bursary of £500 for 2007/8 is Kin Tillyer from Cleveland College

The recipient of the Bursary of £500 for 2008/9 is Flora Parrott studying at Royal College of Art in London

The recipient of the Bursary of £300 for the academic year 2009/10 is Laura Footman who studied at the Cleveland College of Art and Design.

The recipient of the Bursary of £200 for the academic year 2009/10 is Jenny Marsden who studied at the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Bursary for textile student 2010/11 academic year 

 

The City of York Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild would like to award a Bursary during the academic year 2010/11 to a student from the Yorkshire and Humber region postcode area (Click here to see region map), undertaking a degree course in textiles.  Priority will be given to students intending to focus on embroidery or other surface embellishment with stitchery.

The award, of up to £500, will be given to a student to develop his/her textile skills, knowledge and/or understanding. The expectation is that the Bursary could be used for any of the following projects.

· Research into contemporary or historical design and/or technique(s).

· Developing innovative work with textiles.

· Learning new textile or stitchery techniques.

· Creating unique textile objects, fashion or furnishing textiles or trimmings.

· Designing humorous or thought provoking pieces of work.

· Other feasible suggestions will be considered.

The project should  be part of formal course work.

On completion of the project, successful applicants will be required to provide evidence of stitchery and a record of how the bursary was used. This may be shown on the City of York Branch of the Embroiderer' Guild website. Some evidence may be included for display at a future City of York Branch exhibition.  

More details, including the terms and conditions of the bursary and an application form to print out and complete are below.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. The Bursary is for research/project development costs up to £500.

2. The applicant’s permanent home address (not student address) must be in the YO postcode area.

3. Applications and all supporting information must be received by Mrs Sue Giles by 31st May 2010.

4. The awarding sub-committee of the City of York Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild will agree on the award by 15th July 2010 and inform the successful candidate by 31st July 2010.

5. The Bursary committee has the right not to award a Bursary if no appropriate applications are received.

6. The decision of the Bursary committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

7. The Bursary will be given to the successful applicant by 1st October 2010.

8. The project must be completed by the 30th June 2011.

9. In demonstrating how the Bursary has been used, the project holder must submit by August 31st 2011

a. some evidence of stitchery, along with:

b. a record of how the bursary was used including a financial breakdown. This should demonstrate the individual’s artistic or technical ‘journey’ and its end product, and must include one or more of the following:

i. a poster

ii. a portfolio

iii. photographs

iv. a logbook

v. or any combination of the above.

10. Some evidence of the benefits from the Bursary should be made available for

a. potential display at the next City of York Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild embroidery exhibition in York ,

b. inclusion on the City of York Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild web-site: <www.yorkembroidery.co.uk>.

11. The data provided will be used for administrative purposes only, apart from the name and the university of the successful candidate.
